This module outlines inclusive design, looking at all the initial questions of: What - what is inclusive design? This will take a brief look at a couple of definitions and what they mean. We will also define the medical and social models of disability Why - why should we ensure inclusive design is incorporated? We will look at an overview of the societal and individual benefits on inclusive design, the business case, the legal aspects and the implications of an aging population Who - identifying the nine protected characteristics defined under the Equality Act 2010 and looking broadly at the range of people who benefit from an inclusive environment When - when should we be thinking about inclusive design? How - how can we ensure that we create an inclusive environment? Simone West, Inclusive Design Advisor for TfL Simone has been a Chartered Building Surveyor for 25 years, specialising in inclusive design for 17 years. She has had the opportunity to work on some exciting projects, developing a greater understanding and knowledge of what inclusive design means. Perhaps the most notable of these was the London 2012 Games. She has combined this with completing her Msc on Inclusive Design, at the University of Reading, talking at International conferences and providing lectures and training events. Simone sits on the board of the National Register of Access Consultants (NRAC) and is part of the Government initiative to develop inclusive design in the education of property professionals. Simone represents the RICS on inclusive design matters and is Chair of the Inclusive Design Working Group. Simone is a member of the British Standards drafting panel developing a new external standard for BS8300. This series is delivered over six modules, with intervening gaps, allowing you time to reflect, revise and review.
