Passivhaus Retrofit focuses on the renovation of buildings to help them reach their full energy-efficiency potential and Passivhaus standards of comfort and health. Where the Passivhaus classic standard is typically geared around the creation of new build houses, the EnerPHit standard was introduced in 2010 created to bring existing buildings up to date and to meet the world leading Passivhaus EnerPHit standards. This course will offer an introduction to the benefits of Passivhaus retrofit and discuss how to communicate with clients. We’ll delve into the Retrofit processes and share details on the various toolkits which are available and discuss the differences between Passivhaus and Energiesprong retrofit. We’ll cover the EnerPHit standard and look at what we’ve learned through the lived experience of a Passivhaus architect and finally, will present some case studies with technical data from a range of project shapes and sizes.What toolkits are available and where to find helpThe session will explore the most common tools used for planning a retrofit to the EnerPHit standard. This will begin with an introduction to energy modelling with the Passivhaus Planning Package (PHPP), focusing on the functionalities most relevant to EnerPHit, including the various routes to certification and how to plan a staged retrofit. We will then look at how to identify significant thermal bridges and give an overview of how to calculate heat loss through these using thermal bridge calculation software, Psi-Therm. Finally, we will discuss moisture risk from retrofit and the hygrothermal simulation tools available to assess this, focussing on WUFI. SpeakersNaomi Grint, Etude Naomi is a building physics consultant and Passivhaus certifier at Etude. She has 20 years of experience working on environmental projects in various settings, including Architecture practices, local authorities/housing providers and retrofit specialists. She is also a doctoral researcher at UCL Energy Institute, currently completing a PhD on heat and moisture transfer through solid brick walls and the impacts of internal wall insulation.
