The RIBA Principal Designer Register Assessment is a three stage assessment process to evaluate your theoretical understanding and practical experience of the criteria required to meet the competency requirements for both the CDM and the new Building Regulations’ duties (in England) for the role of Principal Designer. Stage 1 RIBA Principal Designer Register Test will test general understanding of knowledge under CDM and the Building Regulations’ in respect of the Principal Designer duties. A further, supplementary test is necessary for those seeking inclusion in respect of higher-risk buildings (note this is not required, if you are not and will not be working with higher-risk buildings). Stage 2 Principal Designer Register Written Submission, requires a return of experience from your CV relevant to the Principal Designer competence criteria. In addition to provision of case studies to support your skills, knowledge, experience and behaviours aligned with the competence criteria. If you have completed the higher-risk building test in Stage 1, you will need to ensure your evidence covers high-risk buildings also. Stage 3 The final stage of assessment; an interview. You will be invited for an interview, once you pass Stage 2. The interview will be to validate the evidence provided and to ensure your understanding of the Principal Designer duties, based on questions and discussion. On successful completion of all three stages, you will be approved for inclusion on the RIBA Principal Designer Register (and if you also completed the test for higher-risk buildings and passed stages 2 and 3 specific to these further competences too, you will be added to the higher-risk building register as well). Your registration will expire after 5 years whereby you will need to reapply. From the point of enrolling for the RIBA Principal Designer Register Assessment, you have 12 months to meet all three stages, with submission and interview dates scheduled monthly. Note: The Academy page states that stage 2 is ‘passed’ once you ‘submit’, but you will only have formally passed that stage when you have been assessed and the examiner(s) signs the stage off as met.
