The RIBA Principal Designer Register Assessment for domestic client competencies is a two stage assessment process to evaluate your theoretical understanding and practical experience of the criteria required to meet the competency requirements for both the CDM and the new Building Regulations’ duties (in England) for the role of Principal Designer (for domestic projects, involving domestic clients only). Stage 1Principal Designer Register Test will test general understanding of knowledge under CDM and the Building Regulations’ in respect of the Principal Designer duties. Stage 2Principal Designer Register Written Submission, requires a return of experience from your CV relevant to the Principal Designer competence criteria relevant to the attainment category selected. In addition a requirement for the provision of case studies to support your skills, knowledge, experience and behaviours aligned with the competence criteria (case study evidence is to be a maximum of 5000 words across all studies provided). On successful completion of the two stages for your application, you will be approved for inclusion on the RIBA Principal Designer Register. Your successful assessment validation will expire after 5 years whereby you will need to reapply. From the point of enrolling for the RIBA Principal Designer Register Assessment, you have 12 months to meet the two stages of the domestic category.Prior to enrolment please ensure you read our Principal Designer Register Handbook and the Competence Criteria.
