In this module Charles will be following on the theme of social value as he presents his module on Investigating historic buildings and their wider social value. Charles will be specifically addressing functionality & building specificity as a tool to explore how they acquire develop, or indeed alter their social value. What is social Value Participants will understand the potential for historic assets to be of value beyond a financial one. They will be aware of the health, well-being and community building value of built assets. An understanding of conservation principles Participant will understand the framework of Historic England’s Conservation Principles and how the ‘historic’ and ‘communal’ values evolve with cultural change An understanding of the reasons we retain assets from the past Participant will be aware of the cultural and financial benefits of retaining historic assets and how stakeholder management becomes stakeholder engagement How to map the shift and pace of change in communal value Participant will appreciate the need to ‘drive the discussion’ and harness the future in terms of support for heritage assets, ‘giving projects legs in the community’ What needs to be considered to create an inclusive and sustainable environment in heritage assets Participant will be aware of the benefits of creating an inclusive culture within the heritage environment and how this might augment historic and communal value How to determine capacity for change in the historic environment Participants will be aware of methods of mapping potential for change in the historic environment What do heritage assets have to teach and inform us of future planning and construction practices Participants will be aware of historic practices which may hold answers as to how to address the future of construction and how the built environment serves people. These CPD modules have been curated to provide learning opportunities for all architects, whether they are newcomers or experienced, in the field of heritage.SpeakerCharles Bain-Smith The National Trust:Senior Building Conservation Manager, RIBA SCA Charles is a Chartered Conservation Architect by profession and is an RIBA Accredited Specialist Conservation Architect. He started his career with English Heritage, he set up a consultancy team in a conservation contractors, was one of the founding partners and Conservation Director of specialist Cyma Architects before joining NT in 2015 working out of the Scotney Hub and subsequently joined the central buildings team in 2019. He is a central source of advice on the conservation of buildings. His role is about supporting delivery of projects, developing strategies, setting policies/standards and facilitating change so that NT remains an exemplar in conservation of buildings and facilitating in projects. He also coordinates with the wider world of conservation, promoting NT in conservation circles.Please note Each recording will expire 12 months after enrolling onto the module.
