Why This Watch Matters A vintage watch that looks like it comes from the future, with a case that is as tonneau as tonneau gets. The Full Story Introduced in 1971, and produced in a run of about 1,000 examples, the El Primero A781 rocks the block indexes and "smoke" dial of its A782 and A783 brethren, but with a vibrant burgundy red dial. The sub-dials themselves are a smokey grey-silver, and are boldly oversized. Say what you will about date windows, this one between 4 and 5 o’clock actually seems subtle compared to the dramatic components of the rest of the dial. The blue central seconds hand pops against the red dial, and further differentiates the A781 from the A782 and A783. The individual elements of this watch are classic 1970s, but on the wrist is where this watch comes together and really shines. Combining the thick, tonneau case with the imposing large-link integrated bracelet, Zenith echoed the design of the earlier Defy models, but with an incredible El Primero dial layout. It is astounding to think that this watch only measures 38mm in diameter - but the presence it lends is immeasurable. All of the lume plots are present as well, and match the lume on the hands. The bracelet has little to no stretch, and the case fits it very well, exhibiting little sign of any polishing. There are some light scratches to the plexi and caseback, but overall, this watch is an excellent example of one of the rarer Zenith chronographs of the early 1970s.
