Why This Watch Matters The ref. 1680 was the first Submariner to feature a date complication. Today, Rolex continues to offer the Submariner with and without the option of a date. The Full Story Rolex changed the game when introducing the Submariner in 1953. Since the Submariner's inception, Rolex has consistently upgraded and updated it with the latest technology, all while staying true to its original design – for the most part. In the late 1960s, a date function was added to the Submariner, with the ref. 1680. The ref. 1680 was produced until the late 1970s with very little variation. At first Rolex offered this reference with the "Submariner" text on the dial in red, until it reached the 4.0 million serial number range, where it was then changed it to all-white text - just like the example we have today from 1978. This Submariner is in overall great condition. The lume has aged consistently to a very pale yellow-white color, and the bezel has aged to a very dark grey with hints of blue depending on how the light hits it. The case is strong with scratches and has been polished. The caseback has some horizontal marks on the surface, most likely from being worn on a NATO strap previously. The dial is in very nice condition with light patina. The lume on the hands and dial are very close to matching in color. The original bezel is in overall nice condition with some light scratches. The bezel has aged to a dark grey that looks blueish in some lights. The original 'Top Hat' crystal has light scratches.
