The Full Story Rolex changed the world of watches forever when they introduced the Submariner in 1953. Today the Sub is one of the most sought after and collectable watches, for both modern and vintage examples. It’s arguably the most famous watch of all time. Since the Submariner's inception, Rolex has consistently upgraded and updated it with the latest technology, all while staying true to its original design – for the most part. When Rolex came out with the reference 1680, the biggest change was the addition of a date function. This was the first Sub with a date, and Rolex still offers the Sub with or without the date. The ref. 1680 was made until the late 1970s with very little variation. The reference 1680 would feature the word "Submariner" in red text on its dial until the 4.0 million serial number / mid-1970s and then the Crown changed the dial to all-white text, like the watch we have today. This Submariner is in overall excellent and attractive condition. The overall aesthetic of the dial, hands, case, and bezel is just gorgeous. The case has remained super sharp with the bevels still present, and the lume has all aged to a stunning custard color. This is one of the most attractive “white” 1680s to cross our desks, and we're very pleased to be able to offer it here. As Rolex sport models with four-digit reference numbers rise in demand and value, quality examples with all matching lume in this kind of condition are getting harder and harder to find. The case is strong with some scratches. The bevels on the lugs are still present and the feet on the lugs are present too. The top edge of the five o'clock lug has a slight nick in the edge of the case. The caseback has some scratches around the edge, most likely from opening the case. The numbers and finish between the lugs are crisp and clearly visible. The case is probably unpolished. The back of the lugs have some marks. The dial is in excellent condition with little patina, though the hands have developed some patina. The lume on the hands and on the dial have developed patina and have aged to the same beautiful custard color. The original bezel is in overall great condition with some light scratches. The C & I Rolex rivet Oyster bracelet is in great condition with little stretch. The clasp is dated "79." This watch was photographed on a 175mm/6.9inch wrist.
