Why This Watch Matters The glossy dial of this later Submariner 5513 is hard to resist, especially when it comes with some vanilla patina on the handset and indexes. The Full Story The Submariner 5513 was produced for almost 30 years, which tells you how right Rolex had been with this 40mm diver. It only owes its disappearance to the introduction of the sapphire crystal, which explained the launch of the Submariner reference 14060 in early 1991. Yet, late 5513 examples bear some transitional characteristics, such as a glossy black dial with white-gold surrounds around the indexes, the same configuration soon to be found on the reference 14060. The combination of the old school plexi and the deep black dial is a sight in itself, the type vintage enthusiasts go crazy for. The indexes and handset exhibit the slight vanilla patina that we often observe on Rolexes from that period. The case has been well preserved; it still offers thick lugs, although it shows some light scratches on the case bands. The bracelet is original to the watch, and does not exhibit an excessive stretch (however, it does come with superficial scratches to its links). Lastly, the plexi comes with a small impact near 6 o’clock, but it does not hinder the looks of this sweet Sub.
