Why This Watch Matters This 5513 is one of the last Subs produced with a plexi, which gives an amazing glossy look to its black dial. The Full Story In early 1991, the Rolex Submariner reference 14060 was launched; this new watch marked the end of an era as the plexi disappeared and was replaced by a colder sapphire crystal. It is often considered to be the frontier between vintage and modern, so this L serial 5513 from 1989 remains one of last Submariners to be produced with the plexi, which brings an incomparable light to the black dial. It looks as glossy as the very early Subs that make the headlines at auction, but for a much more reasonable price tag. The case is remarkably sharp and probably unpolished, which you can see from the raw thickness of the lugs and the definition of the lug holes. Furthermore, the black glossy dial does not show any of the crazing found on earlier watches, and the indexes have taken an awesome patina also found on the handset. The bezel and Oyster bracelet both seem to be original, and are in great condition. This is the type of Submariner we wish we could find more often.
