The webinar offers delegates the opportunity to learn about historic approaches and theories in the conservation of the built heritage in Europe throughout the years. Knowing about past interventions and approaches to conservation can help practitioners and other professionals in reading and understanding better a historic building. Who should attend? For students, newly qualified, experienced architects and other designers interested in the history and theory of building conservation. This course is also open to other duty-holders such as clients, contractors, consultants, and other built environment professionals wishing to learn more about the topic. This session examines the evolution of conservation theory and practice in Europe from the 19th century to World War II. It features case studies from France, focusing on Viollet-le-Duc and Stylistic Restoration, and the UK, exploring the contributions of John Ruskin and the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB). This webinar provides an overview of the development of conservation theory and practice in Europe, from the Renaissance to the 19th century. It explores key milestones, including the protection of French heritage after the Revolution and highlights Rome as a case study, examining the conservation of iconic structures such as the Pantheon, Colosseum, and Arch of Titus. Marc also delves into the work of Luca Beltrami and his approach to Historical Restoration, as well as Boito’s principles of Philological Restoration, concluding with the first Italian charter of conservation. Speaker Marc Piqué i Gascón Marc is a RIBA-accredited Specialist Conservation Architect and Partner at Feilden+Mawson, specialising in the conservation and adaptation of historic buildings. With experience spanning churches, castles, museums, and country houses, Marc focuses on understanding historic structures to manage change and extend their lifespan. After studying architecture in Barcelona and conservation in Florence, Marc worked with Albert Plà i Gisbert Arquitectes before moving to England in 2013. He joined Philip Hughes Associates in Somerset, completed an MSc in Conservation of Historic Buildings at the University of Bath, and later joined Feilden+Mawson in 2019, becoming Partner in 2024. Marc is a Quinquennial Inspector for the Diocese of London, a member of ICOMOS UK, and a regular lecturer on building conservation.
