Solid Oak 4 Ledge Barn DoorA modern take on a classic style, this barn door has four horizontal ledges rather than the usual three, which gives it a more contemporary feel. It is one of our oak barn doors, and it works just as well in barn conversions and country cottages as in more modern homes.Made from Grade A solid oak from sustainable sources, the ledges are screwed and plugged onto the vertical boards. Square oak plugs are used, and the ledges have a chamfered edge and run the full width of the door. Unlike a ledge and brace door, a barn door has no diagonal braces; it relies on the ledges alone, which gives it a solid, flat-fronted look. As a Grade A door, the oak is graded for an even colour and a straight grain, so the face reads clean while still showing the natural grain and knots.Tongue and groove construction is used, with a decorative V-groove on the front and a microbevel on the back. Because it is a prime grade door the boards are cut to equal widths for this design, so the door has 4 boards at 686mm, and 6 boards at 762mm and 838mm. All doors are 44mm thick, made up of 22mm boards and 22mm ledges, and the gap between the top and bottom of the door and the nearest ledge is approximately 7 inches.Being solid oak all the way through, rather than an oak face over a manufactured core, the door can be sanded back and re-treated over its life, and trimmed a little to fit an opening. Oak moves slightly with the seasons, so leave a small gap for expansion when fitting.A barn door like this pairs well with traditional T-hinges, the long strap hinge that runs across the ledges and matches the plain board face. It is also available in made-to-measure sizes for a non-standard opening.All of our oak internal doors are supplied untreated and sanded, so you can finish them yourself, or choose our in-house oiling service to have them pre-finished before delivery. Use a suitable hardwax oil such as Treatex and seal all faces before hanging, including the top and bottom edges.
