Layrr Materials Steel 4340 is a premium, vacuum-melted powder designed for the additive manufacturing of high-stress structural components. While many steels offer hardness, 4340 is prized for its toughness at high strength levels. It possesses deep hardenability, meaning large cross-section parts printed via DED (Directed Energy Deposition) or LPBF will achieve uniform mechanical properties from the surface to the core after heat treatment. Material Behaviour & Microstructure 4340 derives its legendary performance from a precise balance of alloying elements: Nickel (1.65 - 2.00%): Increases toughness and ductility, preventing the steel from becoming brittle during quenching. Chromium & Molybdenum: These carbide formers provide the deep hardenability and high-temperature strength required for heavy-duty powertrain applications. Carbon (0.38 - 0.43%): The backbone of its strength. Unlike maraging steels, 4340 relies on a traditional carbon martensite transformation.
