It is the single most versatile alloy in the additive manufacturing ecosystem. Layrr Materials 17-4 PH is a gas-atomised powder designed to deliver this duality without compromise. We supply a feedstock with tightly controlled Niobium and Copper content—the critical elements that drive the precipitation hardening reaction. Material Behaviour & Microstructure The "PH" stands for Precipitation Hardening. The magic of this alloy happens after the print. Martensitic Matrix: As printed, the structure is primarily low-carbon martensite, providing a solid baseline of strength. The Copper Effect: During the aging process, nanometric Copper (Cu) precipitates form within the matrix. These precipitates pin dislocations, driving the hardness up significantly (up to 44 HRC). Corrosion Shield: Despite its high strength, it maintains corrosion resistance comparable to 304 Stainless Steel in most environments. Processing Advantage: The Layrr Standard 17-4 PH is famous for its "printability," but powder quality dictates the fatigue life. Argon Atomization: We use high-purity argon atomisation to minimize oxygen pickup and nitrogen absorption, which can inhibit the proper martensitic transformation. High Flow: Excellent hall flow rates ensure smooth recoating, critical for maintaining layer thickness consistency in fast-production LPBF environments. Weldability: The low carbon content makes it highly weldable and resistant to cracking during the rapid solidification of laser melting.
