Enrofloxacin is a veterinary fluoroquinolone (FQ) antibiotic with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. FQ drugs chelate iron with high affinity. This chelation leads to the inhibition of Fe(II)-dependent dioxygenases, which are involved in the regulation of epigenetic control, collagen maturation, and degradation of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF). Side effects associated with FQ drugs include nephrotoxicity and tendinopathy. Enrofloxacin is used in aquaculture, and its use may lead to the proliferation of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms in the aquatic environment.
