Christian Hook won Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year in 2014 — the resulting commission, a portrait of Alan Cumming, now hangs in the National Galleries of Scotland alongside work by Botticelli and Rembrandt. Born in Gibraltar and trained at Middlesex University and the Royal College of Art, Hook is preoccupied with time and motion: the way a face or a figure exists across several instants simultaneously, each layer of transparent paint a different moment in a single image.Akashik IX belongs to a series that explores consciousness and perception through Hook's layered paint technique — each layer a different temporal moment, the final image a portrait that refuses to sit still.
