Step Up to the Half: Your 12-Week Blueprint You’ve built your foundation with the 5km or 10km, and now you’re ready to take on the half marathon. Moving up to 21.1km is an exciting challenge, but it also requires a different approach to training. The goal isn’t just to run further — it’s about building your endurance, learning how to pace yourself, and preparing your body for the demands of the distance. I created this 12-week program to give you the structure and guidance needed to make that transition smoothly. My aim is to take away the guesswork while helping you enjoy the process of becoming a stronger, more confident half marathon runner. This isn’t about obsessing over every split or making training feel overwhelming. It’s about learning to understand your effort, building your endurance step by step, and developing the skills needed to arrive at the start line feeling prepared. Program Outline Structured Progression: The program is divided into three 4-week blocks. Each block includes three weeks of building your fitness, followed by a lighter week to allow your body to recover, adapt, and prepare for the next stage of training. The 5-Tier System: I use a simple 5-tier effort scale—ranging from easy conversational running through to short, high-intensity efforts—to help you understand how each session should feel. This allows you to train effectively without becoming overly reliant on pace or watch data. Fuelling Importance: I’ll guide you through fuelling strategies around your key sessions, including when to use carbohydrates before and after training. The goal is to help you maintain energy, recover well, and get more out of your workouts. Runner Conditioning: The program includes cross-training and strength work to support your running and prepare your body for the demands of longer distance training. Building durability helps you stay consistent and handle the increased workload as you progress. Prerequisites Ideally, you should be comfortable running around 10km, have some experience with structured training, and currently be averaging approximately 25–35km per week. You don't need to have completed a half marathon before — this program is designed to help you build the confidence needed to complete the distance and enjoy the process along the way.
