Why This Watch Matters Powered by the famous Valjoux 72, and featuring an unusual double-bezel and an anthracite grey dial, this is the perfect vintage chronograph for any engineer, scientist, or professor who wants to get back to their manual roots. The Full Story LeCoultre isn't the only brand to have produced tool watches and chronographs fitted with special bezels that could be used for various manual calculations. There was the Breitling Chronomat and the Navitimer, with their famous slide-rule bezel and the funky Heuer Calculator ref. 110.633. The LeCoultre Calculator Chronograph is a lesser-known example that features a two-layer slide rule on the bezel. Here, the outer ring rotates and the inner ring remains fixed. The slide rule is designed to measure distance, as well as convert weight and volume from the imperial to the metric system and vice versa. The dial on this example is nicely preserved in matte anthracite grey with original tritium lume plots on the dial that have darkened to match those on the hour and minute hands. The applied hour markers feature a visible facet that slopes to the periphery of the dial, meeting a faded white ring with the chapter ring outside of it. The red seconds hand adds just the right amount of color to the watch. The cushion-shaped case is in strong condition with the original satin finish clearly visible. It offers contemporary wearability with its 38mm case and 12.5mm thickness. The slide rule bezel is in good shape too, with light wear around the ridged edges from use. Inside is the legendary manually-wound Valjoux 72 chronograph movement, which famously powered a variety of vintage Rolex chronographs, such as the Daytona, and the Heuer Carrera. The esoteric calculator functionality, and the iconic movement inside, make this LeCoultre an excellent addition to any collection, with plenty of clear-cut value. The case is strong with light scratches; the finish on the case is visible. The "stainless steel" engraving is fully visible on the caseback. The dial has developed patina on the sub-dials. The hour and minute hands have developed patina toward the tip of their hands; the hour hand has a small white spot on it toward the tip. The lume on the hands and dial have developed patina and darkened. The bezel is in good condition with some wear on the edges and sides. The crown is unsigned, which is common for this model.
