A cam follower is a bearing with a stud, with needle rollers inside a thick-walled outer ring. The outer ring rotates and runs directly on the mating track (cam guide surface), so cam followers suit cam mechanisms and linear motions and are used in machine tools, industrial robots, electronic devices and office automation (OA) equipment. In the part number, the number is the outer ring diameter in 1/16 inch; B is the hexagon hole in the stud head (no B is the screwdriver slot), V is the full complement type (no V is with cage), UU is the sealed type (no UU is the shield type), and R is the crowned outer ring (no R is cylindrical). Selecting the right option The options on this page are the stud diameter (inch) and the roller width (the outer ring width C). Where two models would otherwise show the same stud diameter and roller width, the model number is added in brackets to the roller width of the second one. Models with the same stud diameter and roller width but a different outer ring diameter D: 19.05 mm (3/4 in) OD and 22.225 mm (7/8 in) OD (CR12VBUU and CR14VBUU); 25.4 mm (1 in) OD and 28.575 mm (1 1/8 in) OD (CR16VBUU and CR18VBUU); 31.75 mm (1 1/4 in) OD and 34.925 mm (1 3/8 in) OD (CR20VBUU and CR22VBUU); 44.45 mm (1 3/4 in) OD and 47.625 mm (1 7/8 in) OD (CR28VBUU and CR30VBUU). Check the Model Details for D before you order. Match the stud diameter and thread to your mounting hole and nut: the Model Details list the thread, the thread length and the hexagon hole size. This page is the cylindrical outer ring type. A cylindrical ring has a large contact area with the mating guide surface and suits applications where the applied load is large or the guide surface hardness is low. Every model here is the full complement type, which is suited to heavy loads at low speed rotations. The Model Details give each dimension in mm with the inch size in brackets. A maximum allowable static load is not published for the inch cam follower series: ask AIMS if you need that figure. Fitting and use Make the centre axis of the mounting hole perpendicular to the direction of travel and match the stud shoulder accurately with the seating surface given by dimension f (min.) in the Model Details. Keep the chamfer on the mounting hole as small as possible (C0.5 or so), and do not hit the flange head directly with a hammer, because that can lead to irregular rotation or cracking. Hold the hexagon hole with a hex key and tighten the nut with a spanner: turning the hexagon hole itself to tighten can damage it. Do not exceed the maximum tightening torque in the Model Details, because an over-tightened thread can break. Where loosening is possible, use a lock nut, spring washer or self-locking nut. The mark on the flange head shows the oil hole position on the raceway: keep the oil hole out of the loading zone. The recommended mounting hole tolerance for the stud is F7. Lubrication: the models on this page are prepacked with grease. Track capacity is the load that can be applied continuously on a steel cam guide surface of 40 HRC without deforming or indenting it. For a different hardness it is multiplied by the track capacity factor (0.58 at 30 HRC): ask AIMS if you need the factor for your guide surface.
