This kit represents the Sd.Kfz. 181 Panzerkampfwagen VI (P) - the Porsche-designed Tiger prototype (VK 4501(P)) that competed against the Henschel design ultimately adopted as the production Tiger I. Ferdinand Porsche's petrol-electric drivetrain proved unreliable and the design lost the contract, but around 100 Porsche Tiger hulls were already built, and most were later converted into the Ferdinand/Elefant tank destroyer. A handful of complete, turreted Porsche Tigers briefly saw combat service on the Eastern Front with schwere Panzer-Abteilung 653 and 654 before conversion, making this an unusual and historically significant subject rarely modelled outside dedicated Dragon tooling. Dragon's 1/72 kit captures the distinctive Porsche suspension, hull shape and turret that distinguish this prototype from the standard production Tiger I, with crisp slide-moulded detail and a decal sheet for period markings.
