Flame-backed fiddler crab The male fiddler crab has one huge claw that he uses for fighting with other male fiddler crabs. Often, a show of arms is enough and the guy with the bigg est equipment wins without a fight. The claw is also shown off in courtship. The waving motion the crab makes with its giant claw gives the impression that he is playing a fiddle. This is where the name 'fiddler crab' comes from. Flame-backed fiddler crabs, confusingly, have a black back but their legs are red. This has led to the use of another name, Darwin red-legs. They live in mud and sand in coastal areas and are often found around the edges of mangroves. This cushion features the same pattern on both sides, but at different scales, as shown in the images.
