Flame-backed fiddler crab The male fiddler crab has one huge claw that he uses for fighting with other male fiddler crabs. Often, a show of arms is enough and the guy with the bigg est equipment wins without a fight. The claw is also shown off in courtship. The waving motion the crab makes with its giant claw gives the impression that he is playing a fiddle. This is where the name comes from. Flame-backed fiddler crabs, confusingly, have a black back but their legs are red. This has led to the use of another name, Darwin red-legs. They live in mud and sand in coastal areas and are often found around the edges of mangroves. The top of the purse frame measures 7.5cm across.
