Among the Ojibwe, the dreamcatcher takes its name from the same root as the word for spider, after the web the hoop imitates, and the ring was traditionally hung near a sleeping child. This version is drawn entirely in black ink, an artist's reading of that old shape, with a wolf looking straight out of the hoop. Ink, web and feather The head fills the upper ring, its muzzle and brow marked in white against solid black fur with a heavy ruff beneath. The rim behind it is geometric rather than woven, a circle of triangles pointing inward, and beaded cords fall from its lower edge. What hangs below the head Three webbed hoops hang on those cords, the middle one a dense radiating mandala, the two outer ones smaller and simpler. Lower still, a fourth ring holds a five pointed star, and a small ringed disc closes the bottom. Five long feathers hang between the strands, each drawn with the barbs separated in fine line work. The design keeps to black on white throughout, closer to tattoo flash than to painting, and reads as one tall vertical column.
