Fragile | Online Group Exhibition July ‒ August 2020 Planthouse is pleased to present an online group exhibition featuring: Heather Watkins, Wendy Small, Naho Taruishi, Lothar Osterburg, Ruth Lingen, Valerie Hammond, Greg Foley, Louise Eastman, Victoria Burge, Noah Breuer, Anders Bergstrom, and Mildred Beltré About the Artists: Heather Watkins Heather Watkins lives and works in Portland, Oregon. Her work takes many forms, oscillating between drawing and sculpture, text and textile, to explore the nature and nuance of line—as form, gesture, and sensation. She has presented exhibitions at venues including Portland Art Museum, Portland, OR; lumber room, Portland, OR; Planthouse Gallery, New York, NY; Canada, New York, NY; Douglas F. Cooley Memorial Art Gallery, Reed College, Portland, OR; and PDX Contemporary Art, Portland, OR. Her work is held in many public and private collections, including the Portland Art Museum, Miller Meigs Collection, Portland State University, Reed College, the Collection of Jordan D. Schnitzer, the Rhode Island School of Design Artists’ Books Collection, and the Artists’ Book Collection of the Museum of Modern Art. She has received grants from the Oregon Arts Commission and The Ford Family Foundation. She has been awarded residencies at Caldera, Sitka Center for Art & Ecology, Oregon College of Art and Craft, Stelo Arts, Sun Valley Museum of Art, and Township10. Watkins holds an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and is represented by PDX Contemporary Art in Portland, Oregon. Wendy Small Wendy Small lives and works in Brooklyn NY. She received a degree in painting from the School of Visual Arts, and a BSN from New York University. She was assistant to the painter Terry Winters for 10 years and since then has worked as the nurse at Grace Church School. In 2002 she began working exclusively with the photogram process. Her photograms have been shown in galleries throughout NY and the United States, most recently Sears Peyton, Morgan Lehman and Von Lintel Gallery. She has enjoyed two summers at the Vermont Studio Center Residency and has participated in Aipad, Nada, Pulse and Photo LA. art fairs. Her work is in both private and public collections. She is married to Joe Peppe a furniture maker, and has two children Sofia and Sandro who are also studying art. Naho Taruishi Naho Taruishi lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Her work has been shown locally and abroad, including at Planthouse Gallery, The Drawing Center, Artists Space, A.I.R. Gallery in New York. Lothar Osterburg Lothar Osterburg (b. 1961) is a German-born, New York-based artist and master printer in intaglio, who works in sculpture, photography, printmaking and video. Osterberg has received a Guggenheim Fellowship and awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and New York Foundation for the Arts, and his work has been acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Library of Congress, and Art Institute of Chicago, among others. Ruth Lingen As a shop worker for the legendary New York printmaker Joe Wilfer and midwest bookmaster Walter Hamady, Ruth Lingen learned both her trade and the pleasure of collaborating with living artists. In the years since, she herself has become somewhat of a legend, collaborating with nearly 50 of the world's greatest artists—on prints (some for Pace editions, some on her own) and very special limited edition artist books. She has worked with Jim Dine, Robert Ryman, Mary Heilmann, Kiki Smith, Chuck Close and Claes Oldenberg, Bob Holman, Robert Creeley, Jessica Stockholder and Jeremy Sigler, Donald Traever, Al Held and John Chamberlain, to name a few. Lingen's work can be found in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Getty, and the Brooklyn Museum, as well as in more than 20 libraries, from the New York Public Library to the Harvard University Library. Valerie Hammond Valerie Hammond (b.1952) was born in Santa Monica, California; lives and works in New York City, New York. Hammond received her MFA from the University of California at Berkeley, where she was awarded the Eisner Award. Her work is included in public and private collections such as the Walker Art Center; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; The Library of Congress; the New York Public Library’s Print and Drawing Collection; The Getty Museum; the Progressive Collection; the Chazen Museum of Art; Madison Museum of Contemporary Art; the Grand Palais Museum; and Fidelity Investments Corporate Art Collection. Greg Foley Greg Foley is an artist, author, and designer living in Austin, Texas. He has collaborated on creative projects with companies such as Louis Vuitton, Dior, Warner Bros. Records, Sony Playstation, Gap, Levi’s, Gucci, and Tiffany&Co., and developed cutting-edge projects with New York fashion designers, artists, and musicians. His contributions have been exhibited at institutions such as The Museum of Modern Art New York and the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris. Louise Eastman Louise Eastman is an artist living and working in Brooklyn and Sag Harbor, NY. She focuses on weaving and ceramics. Eastman received her MFA from Pratt Institute, NY, and has recently shown at Silas Marder Gallery, Planthouse Gallery, and Russell Janis Gallery. She’s a member of the Victory Garden Collective, founded in 2016. Previously, she received a MacDowell Colony Fellowship. Victoria Burge Victoria Burge (b. 1976, New York) creates small-scale sculpture and works on paper. Trained as a printmaker, her two-dimensional pieces regularly incorporate the printed mark. Noah Breuer Noah Breuer is an American artist originally from Berkeley, California. His creative work examines themes of family, identity, labor and diaspora. His current project examines the visual legacy of "Carl Breuer and Sons," his jewish family’s former textile printing business, founded 1897 in Bohemia and seized by the Nazis in 1939. Breuer holds a BFA in Printmaking from the Rhode Island School of Design, an MFA from Columbia University and a graduate research certificate in traditional woodblock printmaking and paper-making from Kyoto Seika University in Japan. Anders Bergstrom Anders Bergstrom (b. 1971) was born in Tucson, Arizona and has a Bachelor of Arts, Sociology and Fine Arts from the University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Bergstrom’s work is in the collections of The New York Public Library, University of New Hampshire, Beinecke Library at Yale University, Smith College Museum of Art, MA, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Mildred Beltré Mildred Beltré (b. 1969) is a Brooklyn-based American multi-disciplinary artist known for activist works that focus on how social justice and grassroots movements might reconfigure society. She is co-founder of the Brooklyn Hi-Art! Machine.
