Humulus lupulus, commonly called hops, is a species within the Hemp family Cannabaceae. It is native to Europe, western Asia and North America. It is a perennial, herbaceous vine plant, often supported on twine, rope, or a trellis. It sends up new shoots each spring and then dies back to a cold-hardy rhizome in autumn. Humulus lupulus is a Dioecious species, meaning that the male and female plants are separate, similar to other Cannabaceae family plants. H. lupulus grows rapidly with up to 15-30 foot long vines, with 3 or 5 lobes on each leaf. H. lupulus is grown as an ornamental plant, a medicinal plant, for its use in flavoring a variety of beers, as well as its use as a food preservative. USDA Hardiness Zones 4-8. Humulus lupulus seeds should be pre-soaked in purified or distilled water for 1-3 days then placed into your preferred medium such as peat moss, sand or paper towel. The container should be left in the fridge to cold stratify for 6 weeks. After the six week period, leave the container at room temperature or around 70°F. You should begin to see sprouts within 1-4 weeks. Even with optimal conditions, germination may be slow and sporadic. Move the seedlings into a loose, rich soil mix. Seedlings are sensitive to excess watering. Water when the soil begins to dry out. As plants begin to establish themselves, you will need to provide a structure to support the vining growth.
