Melocactus matanzanusBefore maturity, the plant is a compact green barrel divided by eight or nine vertical ridges, each lined with orderly groups of spines. Its adult phase begins when pale wool and red-orange bristles gather at the top to form a dense cap called a cephalium.This cap is permanent. The green body stops its normal upward growth after the cephalium develops, but the woolly structure can keep lengthening. Carmine blooms push through its surface, followed by narrow fruits coloured in shades of pink and lilac. Show more
