In late summer to autumn it carries airy, reddish flower plumes that age to paler tones and hold well, giving structure through the colder months. Grow in full sun and a moist but well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Leave the stems over winter for interest, then cut back to just above ground level in late winter before new growth appears; established clumps can be divided in spring. Excellent as an architectural feature bringing movement and texture to mixed borders in Irish gardens.
