Respiratory Health Mullein is most renowned for its impact on the respiratory system, earning a reputation as a natural lung tonic. Its benefits stem from compounds like mucilage and saponins: Loosens Mucus: As an expectorant, mullein helps thin and loosen phlegm in the lungs and airways, making it easier to cough up and expel from the body. This can prevent mucus from forming thick plugs that block airflow Soothes Irritation: The mucilage in the leaves and flowers creates a soothing, protective film that coats the mucous membranes in the throat and lungs, calming irritation and dry coughs. Eases Breathing: By clearing airways and reducing inflammation, mullein helps promote clear and unhindered breathing, beneficial for conditions like asthma, bronchitis, and COPD Anti-inflammatory and Antimicrobial Effects Mullein contains beneficial plant compounds such as flavonoids, saponins, and iridoids, which contribute to its other properties: Reduces Inflammation: The anti-inflammatory properties can help calm irritated tissues throughout the body, including the lungs, joints, and skin. Fights Germs: Mullein has both antiseptic and antiviral qualities, and laboratory studies have shown it to be effective at fighting certain bacteria like pneumonia, E. coli, and staph, as well as viruses like influenza Provides Antioxidants: It is packed with antioxidants (like vitamin C and flavonoids) that protect cells from damage caused by unstable molecules called free radicals.
