A large shrub from the Himalayas growing to 4m (13 ft) high. The outer pinkish-red husks (pods) are peppery and can be used as a spice and pepper substitute (as in China) as well a s leaves and immature fruit which make a fantastic garnish or flavoured oil. Please note: there seems to be a debate as to whether this species is dioecious or self-fertile. We have Z.alatum and Z.schinifolium (both with debated self-fertility) planted within 10m of each other and both crop heavily every year. These plants are seedlings of said tree, so to avoid disappointment we would recommend purchasing more than one. Show more
