Tree Selection: Choose a mature, healthy tree trunk that is at least 10 inches in diameter. Installing the box adjacent to mature hardwood or nut-producing trees (like oak, walnut, or hickory) will guarantee fast occupancy. Ideal Height: Securely mount the mansion between 12 to 30 feet high in the tree trunk to offer maximum safety from ground threats. Lighter residential setups can also find excellent success mounted between 4 to 10 feet high. Property Placement: Position the box in a quiet, low-traffic zone of your yard, safely away from busy streets, loud driveways, and high-foot-traffic pathways. Pro-Tip for Quick Attraction: Place a generous handful of raw whole peanuts, walnuts, or striped sunflower seeds straight inside the side entrance holes to guide foraging squirrels to their new mansion instantly. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Why does the Nutty Mansion have two entrance holes instead of one?The dual-entrance design is a life-saving safety feature. If a predator like a raccoon or large owl attempts to block or ambush one entryway, the squirrel has an immediate, secondary escape route on the opposite side to flee safely. What keeps raccoons or opossums from reaching the nesting squirrels inside? The Nutty Mansion features multi-tiered interior safety platforms combined with extended outer predator guards. This advanced layout creates a structural barrier; it gives squirrels easy passage while physically blocking the long arms of climbing predators from reaching the deep nesting cavity. How do I safely mount a 30-pound squirrel house in a tree?Because of its heavy-duty construction, we highly recommend installing the Nutty Mansion with a helper. To make installation easy, many customers temporarily screw a small wooden cleat or ledger block to the tree trunk to rest the weight of the mansion on while securing the primary heavy-duty mounting screws. Will the weight of the mansion damage or harm my tree? No. As long as you follow our mounting recommendations and choose a mature, healthy tree that is at least 10 inches in diameter, the tree can easily support the 30 lb mansion without any structural stress or risk to its growth. Do I need to put bedding or nesting material inside the house? While squirrels are excellent architects and will naturally gather leaves, twigs, and moss to line their nest, adding a 2-to-3-inch layer of clean pine shavings to the floor can make the house significantly more appealing during their initial territory scouting. Never use cedar shavings, as their strong oils can irritate wildlife respiratory systems. How many squirrels can live inside the Nutty Mansion at one time?During the spring and summer breeding seasons, the mansion is typically occupied by a single nesting mother and her litter of kits (usually 2 to 4 babies). However, during harsh winter freezing months, it is common for multiple adult squirrels to peacefully share the mansion to conserve body heat and store extra nuts. How often does the squirrel house need to be cleaned? We recommend cleaning the house once a year, ideally during late summer (August or September) when the spring litters have fledged and before the winter roosting season begins. Simply flip up the grand front panel door, clear out old nesting debris, and wipe down the interior with water and a soft brush.
