While part of the inspiration for this colorway comes from the use of parsley as a garnish on matzo ball soup (and the cilanto in Ashley's grandmother's Moroccan fish, since they're the same color 😉), parsley also has its own symbolism in Judaism.Parsley is said to represent springtime, the time of rebirth.And in springtime, parsley is often used by Jews around the world as the representation of "karpas," one of the rituals of the Passover Seder.Passover Seders are conducted in very specific order (the word "seder" means "order") with symbolic meanings around the retelling of the story of the Jews living in and leaving Egypt in the book of Exodus.Parsley is often used in the ritual of Karpas, dipping a vegetable into a salty or sour liquid and eating it.There are a few interpretations of the symbolism of Karpas. The first is that the parsley represents linen or wool cloth, and the dipping of the parsley into the liquid represents Joseph’s coat of many colors being dipped into blood by his brothers to convince their father that Joseph had been killed - arguably the inciting incident for the Jewish people ending up in Egypt to begin with, and thus the inciting incident of the entire Passover story.Another interpretation is that it represents the Jewish people dipping hyssop into lambs' blood to paint their doorways to protect themselves during the ten plagues.Finally, it is said to represent the tears that were shed by the Jewish people during Exodus, and is often used as a reflection of the tears we shed for all people undergoing hardships in the world today.
