A genuine electromagnetic coil removed from a beam-steering magnet used in the Aladdin electron storage ring at the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s Synchrotron Radiation Center. Each coil was originally mounted around one of the six iron poles of a sextupole magnet. When energized with direct current, the copper winding generated a magnetic field that was concentrated and shaped by the surrounding steel core. Together, the six coils produced a precisely controlled field used to correct and stabilize a beam of electrons traveling through the accelerator at nearly the speed of light. The winding is covered by layers of electrical insulation and a yellow protective coating designed to withstand heat, vibration and prolonged use in a research environment. Visible wear, discoloration, chipped coating and remnants of mounting hardware are expected and reflect the coil’s history as a working scientific component.
