The Caiaffa Primtivo is not what you’re expecting, it’s one of the freshest, juiciest, moreish wines we sell. Coming from Puglia’s cooler northern shores, notes of wild strawberries, red and black berries and dark cherry are joined by dried violets a smoky undertone. The palate is medium-bodied and bright with an almost creamy, velvet-like texture. There is a freshness here too, thanks to the cooling influence of the nearby Mediterranean that colours the fruit and makes this so deliciously moreish. One of the juiciest, most easy-drinking reds you’ll find at this price point and with a subtle complexity that opens it open to a host of foods, most notably grilled red meats, BBQ’ed even better!Primitivo from the Puglia’s sun-baked inlands is often extremely ripe, full-bodied with dark, sweet fruit character. The Caiaffa winery, based on the northern coast, prefer a much less extracted style, favouring the light and perfumed expressions of the native Puglian grapes. Organic certified since 2010, Caiaffa cultivate 35 hectares of vines, prioritising biodiversity in their vineyards. All of their wines undergo spontaneous fermentation and they prefer only delicate use of oak, as is the case in this 100% Primitivo wine which spends three months in barrels of different sizes before bottling. Puglian red wines are not always known for their freshness and precision, but Caiaffa show us that these are styles worth paying attention to.
