Years ago, at low tide, an American Alligator crawled out of the murky waters of the Hillsborough River in Tampa Bay. Not an unusual sight, by any means. For a time, it sat on a sa nd bank and sunned itself, as they do, just long enough for a passerby to snap a photo. Gator physiology is unique in itself. Spiked scutes line their backs. Marble eyes. Often missing limbs from inter-species attacks. Dead calm until they sense being threatened; their bodies burst into action, thrash violently, and escape back into the depths.
