The Reserva designation requires a minimum of 36 months of total aging, of which at least 12 months are spent in French and American oak barrels with a maximum capacity of 225 liters. The estate prioritizes native grape varieties, using 100% Tempranillo for its red wines, and the Castro family views this continuity of tradition — refined across five generations — as the foundation of their winemaking identity.Tasting NotesAroma: The nose opens with ripe red fruit — cherry and plum — before giving way to vanilla and toasted oak. Mineral undertones emerge as the wine breathes, adding depth to an otherwise fruit-forward aromatic profile.Taste: On the palate, Raices Reserva enters with concentrated red berry flavors that expand through the mid-palate into warm vanilla and baking spice notes drawn from its dual-oak aging. The structure is full and unctuous, with integrated tannins that carry the fruit without overwhelming it.Finish: The finish is long and round, with lingering impressions of toasted oak and dried red fruit. A subtle mineral quality persists, keeping the wine grounded and dry as it fades. How to Drink Raices ReservaThis Reserva drinks best at around 16–18°C (61–64°F), ideally after 20–30 minutes of decanting to let the oak-influenced aromas fully open. It is a food-friendly red that rewards pairing rather than heavy cocktail mixing. Sangria: The ripe fruit and oak backbone hold up well against citrus and brandy in a traditional red Sangria. Kalimotxo: A classic Basque combination of red wine and cola that benefits from a structured Reserva-level Tempranillo. Tinto de Verano: Mixed with lemon soda over ice, the wine's fruit character makes a refreshing warm-weather serve. Best For Weeknight dinners featuring grilled lamb, chorizo, or roasted vegetables Introducing someone to aged Spanish Tempranillo without a steep price commitment Building a casual collection of Old World Reserva wines Holiday gatherings where a crowd-pleasing, food-versatile red is needed Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat does Raices Reserva taste like? Raices Reserva delivers concentrated red fruit — cherry and plum — layered with vanilla, toasted oak, and a subtle mineral quality. It is full-bodied and unctuous with a long, round finish. How does Raices Reserva compare to a Rioja Reserva? Both require similar minimum aging periods and rely on Tempranillo, but Valdepeñas wines like Raices Reserva tend to be riper and more fruit-forward due to the warmer, drier climate of Castilla-La Mancha. Rioja Reservas often lean more toward earthy, savory characteristics, especially those from Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. Is Raices Reserva good for sipping neat? Yes, its 36-month aging program produces well-integrated tannins and enough complexity to enjoy on its own, particularly after a brief decant.Where is Raices Reserva made? Raices Reserva is produced by Bodegas Fernando Castro in the Valdepeñas DO, part of the broader Castilla-La Mancha region in south-central Spain. Valdepeñas has a long winemaking history dating back centuries and is one of Spain's most recognized denominations of origin. What foods pair well with Raices Reserva? Grilled lamb chops complement the wine's oak and spice character. Manchego cheese mirrors the Castilla-La Mancha terroir. Chorizo and cured Ibérico ham echo its warm, savory tones. Roasted red peppers and tomato-based dishes align with its ripe fruit profile. What sizes does Raices Reserva come in? Raices Reserva is available in the standard 750ml bottle format. Is Raices Reserva worth the price? Raices Reserva positions as an entry-level to mid-range Reserva, delivering oak-aged complexity that punches above its weight class. Its Gold medal recognition at 89.80 points suggests strong value within the competitive Spanish Tempranillo category. Why Raices Reserva? What separates this wine from the crowded field of Spanish Tempranillo is the combination of genuine Reserva-level aging — a full 36 months, with at least 12 in French and American oak — at a price point that remains firmly accessible. The dual-oak maturation adds aromatic complexity without masking the varietal character of the fruit. Five generations of the Castro family have shaped this house style, and the 89.80-point Gold medal from international competition confirms the wine delivers measurable quality. For anyone seeking an authentic aged Tempranillo from one of Spain's historic wine regions, Raices Reserva represents a reliable and well-structured choice.
