BDNF is secreted by glutamatergic neurons and glial cells in the brain. It regulates normal brain functions by binding to and activating TrkB. BDNF–TrkB signaling promotes the differentiation of cortical progenitor cells into neurons and participates in adult neurogenesis in the hippocampus. BDNF modulates synaptic transmission and long-term potentiation (LTP) in the hippocampus and other brain regions. Dysregulation of BDNF signaling is associated with multiple disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD), depression, and schizophrenia.
