Red Head Pieris (Pieris japonica 'Red Head') Red Head Pieris is an evergreen shrub that brings year-round structure to part-shade landscapes, with a bold burst of spring color that makes beds feel newly refreshed. It is a reliable choice for foundation plantings and woodland borders where you want dependable foliage in every season. The plant keeps a tidy, full look even when it is not in bloom, which helps mixed plantings stay polished. If you want an easy evergreen that adds both foliage color and spring flowers, this pieris is a strong fit. Distinctive Features This selection is prized for vivid red new growth that emerges in spring and stands out against mature, glossy green evergreen foliage. In early to mid spring, it produces drooping clusters of small, urn-shaped white flowers that add a soft bloom display beneath the stems. Flower buds often develop ahead of bloom and can extend interest before the flowers open. The habit is upright to rounded, giving the plant a clean, structured presence that pairs naturally with azaleas, rhododendrons, and other acid-loving shrubs. Growing Conditions Sun: Partial shade is ideal, with morning sun and afternoon shade helping protect foliage quality. Soil: Acidic, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Water: Keep evenly moist during establishment, then water during dry periods to prevent stress. USDA Zones: Zones 5 to 8. Mature Size: Typically grows about 4 to 6 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide. Ideal Uses Focal Point: Use as a focal point near an entry or along a main sightline where the red spring growth and evergreen form provide season-long presence. Foundation Plantings: Add evergreen structure and spring color along the home in part shade. Woodland Borders: Blend into part-shade beds to add texture, bloom, and seasonal foliage color. Mixed Shrub Beds: Pair with azaleas, rhododendrons, and hollies for layered planting and dependable structure. Evergreen Massing: Plant in groups to create a dense backdrop with a strong spring color moment. Low Maintenance Care Watering: Water deeply during dry spells and avoid letting the root zone dry out completely. Mulching: Mulch with pine bark or shredded leaves to conserve moisture and support acidic soil conditions. Pruning: Prune lightly right after flowering to shape, and remove spent flower clusters if you prefer a cleaner look. Feeding: Fertilize in spring with an acid-loving shrub fertilizer if growth is slow or foliage is pale. Protection: Shelter from drying winter winds and harsh afternoon sun to reduce leaf stress. Why Choose Red Head Pieris? Red New Growth: Bright spring foliage adds a bold seasonal highlight in part shade. Evergreen Structure: Glossy green leaves provide year-round form and reliable landscape presence. Spring Flowers: Drooping clusters of white blooms add a refined, layered bloom display.
