Before electricity illuminated ships, deck prisms served a vital purpose — casting light below deck through strategically placed glass blocks set flush with wooden decks. These gen uine replicas are hand-cast from molds taken directly from original 19th-century prisms aboard the Charles W. Morgan, a historic sailing vessel restored at Mystic Seaport between 1977 and 1984. Each piece is individually crafted in the United States, making every prism unique.
