Traditional Pattern Sounding Leads100% Pure Lead - Made in U.S.A.For use with Pre-spliced Leadlines [sold separately] Can be used as a primary depth-finding device, or as a backup for electronics. Typically attached to a light line which is measured off with bands, tags, knots, or paint markings every fathom or so (known as a 'leadline'). PLAIN CAST FINISH We had these made at a local foundry. Each one is hand poured - no two leads are exactly alike. Plain finish will contain some grooves, casting marks, etc. on the surface. They can be sanded and painted, or used "as is" since lead is non-ferrous and cannot rust. Over time, they develop a salty gray patina. SPECIFICATIONS: Traditional octagonal casting pattern offers best stability in 'real world' conditions at sea; i.e. 8 flat sides prevent spinning while deployed... also helps prevent rolling while on deck or stowed below Recessed bottom with grooves can be packed with tallow or grease for picking up bottom samples (sand, mud, pebbles, grass, etc.) Large, built-in cast eye for attaching leadline rope up to 3/8" diameter 3lb weight (6" length) is suitable for inshore soundings at slow speed, dinghy, etc. 7lb weight (11" length) is recommended for offshore/coastal soundings and navigation, and improved accuracy for larger vessels with higher freeboard 100% pure lead - Made in USA COMMENTS: Available individually (3#, 7#) or as a set (one of each) from the dropdown menu above (saves 10% by the set).
