This spring ring is used to secure the rubber boot on the track rod end, preventing the boot from displacing and allowing ingress of dirt, moisture, and road debris into the joint. The track rod end boot protects the grease-packed ball joint that forms part of the steering linkage; if the boot becomes unseated or splits, accelerated wear and eventual joint failure follows.
