Kabocha Mix: emphasizes fruit with kabocha/buttercup characteristics - small to medium size with dark orange, thick, dryish flesh that is sweet and nutty in flavor. Buttercup, Red Kuri, Uncle David’s Dakota Dessert, and Sunspot varieties among others are represented. We’ve included some Hidatsa and Lower Salmon River squash seeds to increase the genetic diversity while also maintaining the sweet, dryish flesh of traditional kabocha varieties. The Other Ones Mix: a blend of over 20 contributions from around the country, including the Pacific Northwest, Northern California, the high desert of S. Utah, and Texas. Plants were selected to be pest-resistant, drought-tolerant, and to germinate in cool soils and resist light frost. Fruits selected for good shelf life with bright or dark orange, good-tasting flesh, and edible skin in some cases. Variety genetics include Blue Hubbard, Lakota Hubbard, Candy Roaster, Lower Salmon River, Lofthouse maxima landrace, kabocha-type and unnamed varieties, including from previous GTS mixes.
