The scientific name of tarragon, a fragrant herb best known for its role in béarnaise sauce and vinaigrettes, is Artemisia dranunculus: Latin for “little dragon herb.” The moniker is said to refer to tarragon’s coiled roots. The herb’s naming origin inspired our linocut print, Tarragon. Various references, from tarragon purchased at the grocery store to dragon illustrations in books of hours (medieval Christian prayer books), informed the print’s design and revealed that tarragon and dragons have more than sinuous curves in common. These sources of inspiration showed that tarragon’s leaves and dragons’ fins are long and pointed as though they share a family tree. These common traits inspired a print in which a dragon’s tail graduates into a voluminous and leafy tarragon plant. Made with water-based inks and acid-free, 100% cotton paper, Tarragon is a limited edition, linocut print that is printed by hand in New York City. The subtle variations that result from hand printing make each print one of a kind. Imperfections, such as uneven ink coverage and waves in the paper ground, are inherent to our block printing process and are part of its beauty.
