Every now and then, a guitar comes along that really blows us away. This Bourgeois Slope D? Good gracious, this is a serious instrument. When you first gaze upon it, the Black Top finish seems impossibly black. It's like a black mirror, and it draws you in like a black hole. Yet, the area underneath the Tiger Stripe pickguard is unfinished, so you can see the natural grain of the Aged Tone Adirondack Spruce through the lighter stripes of the pickguard. From there, every detail is elegant, but understated. It has Madagascar Rosewood fingerboard with simple inlays that don't take away from the gorgeous Madagascar grain. The top, back, fingerboard, and pegehad are all bound with the same Ivoroid and black/white purfling, which also matches the rosette. As for tone, "The Standard" SD somehow sounds better than it looks. It has a rich, harmonic tone that is bold and powerful with strong bass definition and woody, mahogany overtone. Thanks to the Aged Tone Torrefied top, Aged Tone Torrefied bracing, and Animal Protein glue construction, this Slope D has the nuanced tone of a played-in vintage guitar, even though it's brand new.
