Reiki, as a form of energy healing, finds its earliest roots in the sacred temples of ancient Kemet (Egypt), where priestesses and priests practiced hands-on healing through the power of divine life force energy. Known as Sekhem or Ka energy, this healing art was deeply connected to the spiritual systems of Ma’at (cosmic balance) and the life-giving forces of the universe. The ancient Kemites understood the body as a vessel of sacred energy, using breath, sound, symbols, and touch to restore balance and promote healing. Over time, these esoteric teachings spread along trade and spiritual routes into Asia. In China, similar concepts evolved into Qi Gong and Traditional Chinese Medicine, while in Japan, the healing practices inspired what is now widely known as Reiki. In the early 20th century, Mikao Usui revived and systemized Reiki in Japan, yet the essence of this healing wisdom echoes the ancient practices of Kemet. Thus, while Reiki became widely known through Japanese tradition, its soul traces back to the Nile Valley, where the ancients first honored the sacred flow of life force energy. Reiki is a non-invasive technique where an attuned Reiki practitioner can pull concentrated life force energy and pass it along to the client. The goal is to promote a deep state of relaxation for the client, allowing the body to heal and restore balance to the body, mind, and spirit. The Reiki Practitioner will place their hands on or near the body to let the life force energy flow through them and into the client. This method will lead to cleansing the auric field surrounding the client. Reiki is used to cleanse the body, mind, and spirit and bring balance to the chakras to bring relaxation and a blissful experience to the patient. What will happen during a Reiki session? Reiki energy flows from the practitioner's hands into the client in a standard treatment. The client will lie on a massage table if in person. If receiving a virtual service, the client can lie in a comfortable position. During the session, the client remains fully clothed. The practitioner places their hands on or near the client's body in a series of sacred hand positions. The sacred hand positions will include positions around the head, shoulders, stomach, and feet. More specific positions may be used based on the client's needs. The session usually lasts between 45-60 minutes, depending on the service booked. What will I experience during the Reiki session? The experience of Reiki is subjective, changeable, and sometimes very subtle. Clients often comment on how comforting they find the experience of Reiki to be. Some people fall into a deep, sleeplike meditative state. The most common experience is an immediate release of stress and deep relaxation. Reiki is cumulative; even people who do not notice much the first time usually have gradually more profound experiences if they continue. Besides the immediate results from Reiki, changes may continue to unfold as the days goes on, such as being more centered and sleeping deeply at night. What will I experience after the Reiki session? After a Reiki session, practitioners may recommend after-care, such as drinking water and following your body's needs. People typically leave a Reiki session feeling refreshed. Sometimes, they notice feeling more tired in the evening than usual. This feeling is not a harmful reaction but rather the body's natural healing response. Each client's experience of Reiki may vary. People commonly report a sense of serenity, mental clarity, and sleeping well after Reiki.
