Zigzag Goldenrod (Solidago flexicaulis) brings bright yellow blooms and critical late-season nectar to shady garden spaces, where few other plants are still flowering; ideal for woodland borders, dappled understories, or pollinator-focused plantings where fall color and ecological value are a priority. Named for its zigzagging stems and broad foliage, this goldenrod produces upright yellow flower spikes in late summer to fall, attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinators preparing for winter. It also serves as the host plant for the Wavy-Lined Emerald Moth, whose camouflaged caterpillars cleverly decorate themselves with petals and leaves—look closely and you might spot one! Though less aggressive than other goldenrods, it may need dividing over time to keep it in balance with smaller woodland companions. Why Choose Zigzag Goldenrod? Thrives in shade – Brightens low-light areas with fall color. Supports pollinators & moths – Late-season nectar and host plant. Low allergy risk – Goldenrods do not cause seasonal allergies. Plant Zigzag Goldenrod in part to full shade with average to moist soil to enjoy a low-maintenance, wildlife-supporting native that lights up the fall woodland garden.
