Guerrilla Tactics is the RIBA’s annual business conference for small and medium sized practices. Each year the programme is curated by a different Creative Director, selected in a competitive process. The 2021 Guerrilla Tactics Conference was curated by Kyle Buchanan and Mellis Haward of Archio with Rob Fiehn of Robert Fiehn Architectural Communications. It explored the power of collaboration for winning work, levelling up skills, and fostering resilience. The best design processes are facilitated by meaningful collaboration, including with clients and consultants, through public engagement, and by working with other architects. There are also increasing commercial opportunities to be found in collaboration. Small practices often develop specialist knowledge; clients have made it clear that they see enormous value in teams and the fresh perspective and unique expertise of small practices. The 2021 Guerrilla Tactics Conference explored inspiring examples of collaboration from around the country and ways of structuring collaborative processes to maximise their benefit and avoid pitfalls. It set out to inspire a different way of thinking about practice and highlight a new culture of sharing and collective innovation among architects.
