Why This Watch Matters You truly can't go wrong with a "Red" Submariner. The Full Story Rolex introduced the ref. 1680 in the mid-1960s, and it was the first Submariner to include a date function. The watch's defining characteristic is a single line of red text at six o'clock stating the model name. Rolex produced the "Red" version of the Submariner until approximately the watch's 4.0 million serial range (in the mid-1970s), with later models featuring white text. The present example has a dial that falls into the Mark V category, due to the 3.0 million serial number range, the open sixes found on the depth rating, and the red paint writing applied to the dial. This example is in overall great condition with attractive, colored lume on the dial and hands. Red Submariners have a special place in the Rolex community; collectors can't get enough of them.
