Why This Watch Matters One small detail on a dial can change a lot, and that's what this “Red” Sub is all about with its nicely patinated MK5 dial. The Full Story Introduced in the late 1960s, the reference 1680 was the first Submariner to display the date, using the magnifying cyclops window offered in the Datejust. It was produced until 1979, when a sapphire crystal replaced the plexi, thus creating the new 16800 reference denomination. This example from 1972 exhibits the desirable MK5 dial, characterized by the feet first depth rating, and the fairly closed “6” numeral. The dial on 1680s made shortly after this would lose the red line, and offer an all-white configuration that is much less coveted today. The MK5 dial has taken a nice vanilla patina matching the handset, except for the seconds hand, which is slightly darker. The insert is in excellent condition, and might be a replacement part. The Rolex Oyster bracelet is dated from 2007; therefore, it is surely a replacement but it is very tight, a form that an older bracelet could never exhibit if worn at all. Note that the watch comes with a spare link and a green Rolex pouch.
