Why This Watch Matters A little touch of red on the dial makes all the difference. The “Red" Submariner has been a long-standing Rolex collector's essential watch to have in his or her collection. The Full Story The reference 1680 Submariner was introduced in 1966, upgraded with a date function. The domed magnifying crystal over the date, referred to as the Cyclops window, was another useful feature added to this reference. The general consensus is that this reference with the “Submariner” logo in red was produced from around 1969 through 1974. This current example has a Mark V dial that is black matte, and the subdued red color of the “Submariner” signature stands out beautifully. Furthermore, the Feet/Meter designation with a nearly closed number “6” is also a distinct feature of this dial iteration. The dial has aged nicely with softly patinated cream-colored luminous indexes and hands. The movement is improved to a chronometer certified movement which adds to the precision of the timepiece. The bezel appears to be a service replacement. The crystal shows some scratches and a chip on the side between three and four. The crown is a Triple Lock Crown. The dial is evenly aged and few areas of the luminous indexes and hands show very minor spotting. The edge of the dial between five and six show some minor wear which is only visible at certain angles. The movement is in running condition at this time. Based on the bracelet/end piece numbers, we presume that the bracelet is a later version. The bracelet shows some stretch between the links.
