Why This Watch Matters A “Red” 1680 Submariner is a highly collectible vintage Rolex. The one we have here has a beautifully faded blue-grey bezel insert, gorgeous patinated dial, and red Submariner line. What more could you want? The Full Story The Rolex Submariner 1680 has been in production since 1966 and remains one of the most recognizable and desirable vintage Rolex references. The top-hat plexiglass crystal with magnified date aperture further highlights the well-balanced dial and its gorgeous patina. Additionally, this example from 1972 features a Mark V “red” Submariner dial; there are fewer examples of this type of dial, making it very desirable. The most attractive thing about this Sub, though, is the faded blue-grey bezel insert, which separates this watch from the pack. If patina is your thing, this watch is it. The bezel has faded to a wonderful blue-grey color, and has a minor scratch at 40. The Rolex bracelet is not original to the watch, and is slightly stretched.
